Confused words: tired or tiring?

Updated: Aug 7, 2021

Students often get confused with words such as "exciting" and "excited" or "amazing" and "amazed".

Let's see an easy way to remember the difference. Probably, most of us have used the sentence, " The movie is boring" or " I am bored". So, what's the difference?

Well, as is clear from the above examples, "ED" is used to describe people or animals that feel a certain way. On the other hand, "ING" describes what causes that feeling. Think of this, if something makes you feel bored, it is boring.

In other words:

  • ED words focus on the person who is experiencing the feeling.

  • ING words focus on the cause of the feeling.

Here are some more examples:

  • I am tired.(because I slept late.)

  • The trip was tiring.(because it was long.)

Here is one more:

  • Preparing for the test is frustrating, but my trainer helps me feel less frustrated.
